What if your pain and tightness isn't your body asking for stretching? What if that's your body trying to create stability?
Tightness is not an enemy to defeat it's a message from your body that can actually have many different meanings:
- Maybe that area is under a lot of stress
- Maybe this area isn't stable and your body is trying to protect you from further damage
- Maybe there is inflammation and your body is reacting to chemical changes
- Maybe this is a signal that this area is under tension already!
The fact of the matter is you won't know the underlying reason for the muscle tightness until you take the time to unwrap what is happening in the body as an integrated system (not just focusing on the areas that are painful or tight). If you stretch and stretch and stretch but the same muscles are always tight - it's a good indication that stretching is not the right intervention for the cause of your tightness.Â
When it comes to chronic issues, tight muscles are a side effect of pain/overload - not the cause.Â
Most chronic tightness and pain is not simply a lack of flexibility, it's an issue of coordination and stability.
When you try to solve this tightness by opening up more motion with stretching, you actually make it harder to gain control - you could be digging yourself into a deeper hole by continuing to add more motion to the system.Â
There is a strategy to resolving injuries and overload points in your body. Stretching and expanding motion can be a part of that strategy, but it's not the first step.Â
If you're not making any progress when it comes to resolving your injuries beyond temporary relief, there's a good chance you're not utilizing the right strategy.
Once we get clear on the reason WHY those areas are feeling so tight, the best strategy becomes obvious and you can start making meaningful progress!
