Tightness is not an enemy to defeat. It's a message from your body that can have many different meanings:
- Maybe that area is under a lot of stress
- Maybe this area isn't stable and your body is trying to protect you from further damage
- Maybe there is inflammation and your body is reacting to chemical changes
- Maybe this is a signal that this area is under tension already!
You won't know the underlying reason for the muscle tightness until you take the time to unwrap what is happening in the body as an integrated system, not just focusing on the areas that are painful or tight.
If you stretch and stretch but the same muscles are always tight... This is a good indication that STRETCHING is not the right intervention for the cause of your tightness.
When it comes to chronic issues, tight muscles are a side effect of pain/overload - not the cause.
Most chronic tightness and pain is not simply a lack of flexibility, it's an issue of coordination and stability.
When you try to solve this tightness by stretching and opening up more motion, you actually make it harder for your body to gain control - you could be digging yourself into a deeper hole by continuing to add more motion to the system before you understand WHY that tension is happening.
There is a strategy to resolving injuries and overload points in your body. Stretching and expanding motion can be a part of that strategy, but it's not the first step.
